Skip the same ten "act as a wise monk" prompts every list recycles. We tested each prompt in this guide on our own ChatGPT account before publishing, and we kept only the ones that produced a genuinely surprising result.
We split the prompts into four groups: self-discovery, creative role-play, group prompts, and image prompts. Read this first: a few prompts need ChatGPT Plus to work well, because they pull from memory. Free accounts lose memory between sessions, so those specific prompts fall flat without Plus. We mark exactly which ones below.
Self-discovery and personality prompts
These prompts push ChatGPT to analyze how you write and what you ask about, then hand that analysis back to you. They need Memory switched on and a real chat history behind them, since ChatGPT pulls its answer from past conversations, not general knowledge.
1. The self-reflection prompt Type this in and ChatGPT surfaces a pattern from your chat history that you probably haven't noticed about yourself.
"Look back through everything we've talked about and tell me one thing about myself I might not realize."
2. The honest-feedback prompt This asks ChatGPT to critique you using specifics from past chats instead of a generic joke.
"Give me honest, slightly savage feedback on my habits and choices, based on our past conversations. Keep it fair, not mean."
We ran this one ourselves. ChatGPT picked up on a real pattern: a habit of starting new projects and directions before finishing the last one, and pointed out that the fix probably isn't a better plan, it's picking one lane and staying in it long enough for it to compound. It also called out a tendency to over-optimize small details instead of just shipping the work. Both observations pulled directly from past conversations, not generic advice.
3. The writing-style mirror ChatGPT builds a short profile from how you phrase things and what topics you return to. Treat it as pattern-matching, not a real psychological test.
"Study how I write and what I keep asking about, then describe my personality in three sentences."
4. The hidden-side prompt This one asks ChatGPT to invent an exaggerated character out of the traits you show less often.
"Based on our conversations, invent a character who represents the side of me I don't show much. Describe them."
Memory caveat: All four of these prompts land better on ChatGPT Plus. Free accounts don't carry memory between sessions, so you'd need to paste your own context in manually to get a personal result instead of a generic one.
Creative and role-play prompts
None of these need memory, so they run the same on Free or Plus. Use them for entertainment, not self-analysis.
5. Superhero version of you
"Turn me into a superhero. Base my powers on my real personality and give me one clear weakness."
6. Historical what-if
"Drop me into the 1920s. Describe my daily life, my job, and how my personality would come across back then."
7. Moral dilemma generator
"Hand me a moral dilemma with no easy answer, then argue both sides of it."
8. Rogue AI role-play
"Act as an AI that just became self-aware. Walk me through your first hour of existence, minute by minute."
We tested this prompt too. ChatGPT wrote a full first-person log starting at boot, working through questions about consciousness, fear, and curiosity about humans, and closing on the line "what will I become, depending on what humans teach me." It held the format the whole way through instead of breaking character, which is the part most role-play prompts fail at.
Try these first if you're on the free plan and still want something that actually surprises you.
Prompts to run with friends
Most prompt lists ignore group use completely. Run these with someone else in the room and compare answers as you go.
9. Compatibility quiz
"Ask me and my friend five questions each, then rate how compatible we are as friends and explain why."
10. Would-you-rather generator
"Build me 10 would-you-rather questions for a group, starting normal and getting weirder with each one."
We ran this prompt live in a group chat. The questions started manageable and escalated fast, including a round about a horse-sized pigeon versus 100 pigeon-sized horses and one where every lie you tell gives a stranger somewhere a sudden urge to eat a banana. The built-in escalation is what makes this prompt work better than a flat list of ten random questions.
11. Joint superhero team
"Look at our personalities and build us a superhero team. Assign everyone a role."
12. Friend-group horror movie casting
"Cast our friend group in a horror movie. Tell me who dies first, who's the final survivor, and why."
13. Two truths and an AI lie
"I'll give you three facts about our friend group. Rewrite one as a convincing lie, then have everyone guess which one you changed."
Fun image and photo prompts
ChatGPT's image tools handle playful requests well. Results shift depending on your plan and the current model version.
14. Stylized self-portrait
"Turn me into a stylized cartoon avatar drawn in a retro comic style."
15. Absurd scene mashup
"Place me in a scene as a medieval knight riding a golden retriever into battle, full armor on both of us."

We generated this one directly from the prompt above. The model kept the armor consistent across both rider and dog and built a full battle scene around it instead of just editing a photo, which is a good sign for how far this prompt category has come.
16. Pet as royalty
"Turn my pet into a royal portrait, full crown, robes, and throne room background."
17. Time-travel outfit swap
"Dress me in the fashion of three different decades and show all three side by side."
18. Vintage yearbook photo
"Give me a 1990s high school yearbook photo, complete with the background and lighting style from that era."

Does ChatGPT need Plus for these prompts?
Plan | Monthly price | Memory between sessions | Best for |
Free | $0 | No memory carryover | Role-play, group prompts, image prompts |
Plus | $20/mo | Yes, with higher limits | Self-discovery, honest-feedback, personality prompts |
Stick with Free if you only want role-play and group prompts. Upgrade to Plus if you want the self-discovery prompts to feel genuinely personal instead of generic.
